Knoydart Sept 2017 https://www.caledonialight.co.uk/blog/2017/9/knoydart-sept-2017 A weekend in Knoydart with 7 friends...

We left on the Friday morning, having booked the "fast boat" out to Inverie, for the 7 mile sea crossing over Loch Nevis from Mallaig. It was a great alternative start to the weekend, as not only did it get us there considerably quicker that the scheduled ferry service. It also allowed for some wildlife watching with Minky Whales and Porpoise visible along with a host of sea birds. Little know to me it was the very close encounter on the return ferry that provided the best whale watching with the boat having to stop to allow one to pass in front of us safely maybe 10m meters from the boat.

The early arrival on Knoydart meant we had time to climb Sgurr Coire Choinnichean, its one of the smaller Corbetts, but given that it sits with feet in salt water, you will have to climb every inch of it. Sgurr Coire Choinnichean is the most westerly top on a long steep sided ridge forming the N side of Gleann an Dubh-Lochain. It was great that all 8 of us made it to the top as on a previous visit in 2015 only 2 out of the 5 folk did.

Looking down on Loch Nevis and Inverie

Following the excursion up the hill which took roughly 4 hours we visited the Old Forge Inn, which even though its fallen from its glory days as the centre of the village it still serves a refreshing cold pint. (the pub is no longer frequented by the locals due to various issues with the land lord) Followed by an evening of Wisky in the Knoydart Foundation Bunkhouse.

Saturday we took a landrover tour with the local ranger Amy who shared some of the history and ecology of the area along with the visions of the Foundations future following the land buyout.

Looking back to Inverie with the Corbett above the village on the left.

Airor is a hamlet in the peninsula of Knoydart, Lochaber, Highland, on the west coast of Scotland.

It is situated on the north-west coast of Knoydart, and consists of a few houses clustered round Airor Bay, as well as several pre-clearance ruins. The settlement overlooks the Sound of Sleat and the Isle of Skye.

The ponies used by the estate during deer stalking.

Sunday was spent with a walk up the river.

Started to suspect a glow around 9pm after getting an alert on the phone. Ended up staying up past my bed time getting cold, but it was well worth it because by around 10.30 there was dancing lights visible to the eye, as opposed to just a green glow low to the horizon.

Home Snow https://www.caledonialight.co.uk/blog/2017/1/home-snow So we have had the first snow falls of winter at the new house over the last few days, would say around half a foot came down and more forecast for tonight before the rain arrives. However the thaw certainly seemed to be underway when the sun came out this morning. Decided I need to invest in a snow shovel for the future. Here's a short timelapse from the front garden, one shot every 5 seconds.

Ord, Sleat Peninsula.

The Castle of Dunscaith, or more correctly "Dun Sgathaich", i.e. the Dun of the Shadow, was the original seat of the MacDonalds in Skye, although not originally built by them.

Originally the castle belonged to the Clan MacDonald of Sleat a branch of the Clan Donald or MacDonald. At some time in the 14th century it was taken from them by the Clan MacLeod and held briefly by the MacAskills, allies of the MacLeods but it was recaptured by the MacDonalds sometime in the 15th century.

In the 15th century the castle was again captured by King James I of Scotland when the Chief of the Clan Donald, Lord of the Isles was broken by King James I. The MacDonalds were allowed to keep possession of the castle. The MacDonalds abandoned the castle in the early 17th century.

The Uists https://www.caledonialight.co.uk/blog/2016/2/the-uists I spent two days on the Uists this trip and although I have visited them before, I really fell in love with the place this time round. I cant really point to what it is about them. Certainly the people are brilliant, they all wave at you, they speak Gaelic, and they seem to get the sunglasses on at the slightest glimpse of sunlight. I think however it was a combination of the landscape, weather and general atmosphere of the place that I noticed more this time around.

Catching Up https://www.caledonialight.co.uk/blog/2016/2/catching-up I have not had as much opportunity to get with the camera, partly due to a lack of motivation, wild weather or work. However February seems to have changed that. I have had a great couple of weeks working in the field, covering areas that I haven't visited for a while. Even the weather seems to have been obliging during parts of this month so far.

So onto the photos. To start with here are a couple of shots from the last couple of weeks. Before I go onto more detailed posts on my trips to the Hebrides.

This shot has been calling out to be taken for a few years, but its a place that I always seem to drive right by or is a bit crowded. Luckily this time it was deserted and I had a spare 5minutes to stop and set up the camera and tripod.

ArdgourArdgourOften wanted to stop here, as there's a really bonnie burn and old road bridge with this stunning view looking upstream.

Next, any trip to Skye would be remiss if I didn't stop at Eilean Donan to see if its quiet. Today there was a the added bonus of a really nice sunset.

I have just started to change my post processing and photo storage workflow and as part of that have just recently moved to Lightroom instead of Picasa, I'm still getting used to it but it seems like a good software switch so far.

Misty Morning https://www.caledonialight.co.uk/blog/2016/1/misty-morning Managed to get a chance to stop in the Layby by the shores of Loch Ness this morning. It was incredibly cold and very misty in parts but bright sunshine as you drove east towards Inverness. I had wanted to stop and grab a photo here for a while I was intrigued by some of the old ruined boats and the submerged mast that protrudes from the water. Well it felt very atmospheric today.

Another Weekend on Skye - Elgol https://www.caledonialight.co.uk/blog/2015/10/another-weekend-on-skye---elgol So I spent another couple of days out on the Isle of Skye, this time catching up with a friend and his UAV taking some videos of the wonderful landscape. The Highlands have been enjoying somewhat of an Indian summer recently and it was a great first day there with no winds and no midges. I think I must have spent about 4 hours on the Elgol coast making the most of the sunshine.

The sun going down wasnt as spectacular as I hoped for but its such a scenic location its worth watching non the less.

After dusk I managed to get some nice shots of the incoming tide on a long shutter.

Beauly Firth Sunset https://www.caledonialight.co.uk/blog/2015/10/beauly-firth-sunset A stunning sunset from the North Kessock to Redcastle shoreline on the 4th of October 2015. Most of these shots are tone mapped HDR as I was shooting into the sun I wanted to get good foreground exposure, although some are standard with a neutral density filter to allow for the long shutter speed blurring the water. It was the first time I have made use of my gorrilla tripod which provided useful stability yet allowing a low shooting angle.

Bit of a poor panorama due to the blend point between the different shots but I wanted to include it just to capture all the rigs in one shot.

The Blackwater https://www.caledonialight.co.uk/blog/2015/8/the-blackwater The Blackwater Bridge has to be one of my favourite locations, its such a dynamically changing landscape. Not only does the river respond rapidly to changing weather, but the surrounding Birch and conifer trees seem to add so much variety and colour depending on the season.

Early Winter storms bring high river levels and snow flurries.

The Black Isle and my new camera https://www.caledonialight.co.uk/blog/2015/8/the-black-isle-and-my-new-camera So I had a brilliant Saturday on the Black Isle, even though I grew up there, I was guided to some new spots that I had never visited before. Glen Affric In Winter https://www.caledonialight.co.uk/blog/2015/7/glen-affric-in-winter February 2014 and Glen Affric gets blanketed in a thin dusting of fresh snow. This has to be one of the most scenic of Scotland's Glens and can seem quite crowded on a nice summers day. However when I visited everything was very still and tranquil with the snow and low cloud muffling the sounds and apparently no other visitors other than me.

Low Loch levels expose the submerged forest floor.

Most of these photos appear black and white, but in reality all are colour images and it was just the atmospheric conditions that drained any colour detail from the shots. On days like this I usually find it rather challenging to take pictures, but there is so much variety in this Glen theres always something.

Dog Falls on the way into the Glen can often be spectacular in spate, but not when all the rain is locked away as snow on the hills.

Stillness.

Caledonian Lights Timelapse Film https://www.caledonialight.co.uk/blog/2015/7/caledonian-lights-timelapse-film Skip to the end to see the film, make sure to watch in HD 1080p.

I have been hooked on timelapse photography ever since seeing early trailers from Tom Lowe's http://timescapes.org projects. As everyone who lives in the Scottish Highlands knows, the weather is notoriously unpredictable and often rather horrible. Two of the biggest challenges this creates for any timelapse work is rapidly changing light conditions and camera shake brought on by the wind. Unless you have access to some top of the range camera equipment like the Red Epics used in "Timescapes" then you are somewhat limited in the results you can achieve.

A timelapse in progress taken using my phone.

Timelapse in progress.

Up till now all my timelapses have been shot on my venerable Panasonic G2 camera with a PcLix intravalometer (read plugin gadget to control how often the camera takes a picture). This leads to one drawback, it ties up your primary camera for the duration of the filming, often hours at a time. Meaning you spend  most of the time standing around trying to keep warm. The still images are then stitched together using computer software into a resulting video clip then compressed to a reasonable file size.

This method of processing does lead to some benefits; you can overlay all the images into a single photograph chronicling the experience.

Its been on my mind to create a slightly longer time-lapse clip than I have in the past. Partly to combine new footage and partly to experiment a bit more with my editing software. Hopefully in the future I will have some higher quality clips to release now that I have one of the new GoPro cameras I shall endeavour to get out a bit more and capture some new stuff.

I wont bore you with the details of locations, however most have been taken in reasonable proximity to Inverness with a few at the Firth and local Lochs. Feel free to enquire about specific locations if interested.

My first foray into a photography website https://www.caledonialight.co.uk/blog/2015/7/my-first-foray-into-a-photography-website I have eventually got round to creating this site, its been one of those things that's been on my to do list for a considerable period of time. First impressions of Zenfolio and its photo hosting is impressive, the page setup and content upload is super simple, the hardest part is considering what themes and layouts to use, so expect some changes as I experiment a bit more on the design side.

At some point I shall enable the selling functionality and the digital purchases of media, but at present its primarily just a portfolio of my work, so all purchase prices for physical media is just at the cost price.

Feel free to comment on any of the images or contact me directly either here or on my facebook page.

Kind regards
Andrew
